Academic Highlights
The department of French Language and Literature, officially began its work in 1956, at the undergraduate level, a year after the founding of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities. At present, the department offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in French Language and Literature and French Language Translation. Undergraduate students are required to complete 135 credit hours (including general education courses and required courses) within 8 semesters of enrollment and graduate students are required to complete 32 credit hours in a minimum of 4 semesters. Both degree programs include a thesis project (4 credit hours to earn a Master’s degree and 2 credit hours to earn a Bachelor’s degree). The Master's program requires students to defend their theses before they can graduate.
Undergraduate Program
The main focus of the first and second year curriculum for both disciplines (i.e., French Language and Literature and French Language Translation) is on basic courses, aiming to reinforce language skills through conversation, reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and phonology. Required courses begin by the 5th semester. During their course of study, undergraduate students of French Language and Literature get familiar with different literary genres (such as novels, plays, poetry, etc.), study literary schools of each period, and learn to explain and interpret literary works to a limited extent. Yet, French Language Translation chiefly concentrates on the structure of language coupled with translation and interpretation, targeting at developing translation skills in various domains for the graduates to be able to work as experts in public or private sectors.
Graduate Program
During the course of their graduate program, students of French Language and Literature gain a deeper understanding of literary texts through a series of specialized investigations. The major aim is, thus, to foster a spirit of criticism and deduction skills. At the end of this program, students should be prepared to shape a mental image of a particular concept on which they conduct practical research. This ability, along with their mastery of the French language, will be assessed through developing the Master’s thesis written entirely in French. Proposing scientific theories at this level could be limited to French literature or be extended to comparative literature, depending on the students’ interests. As for French Language Translation, the ultimate goal is to produce professional translators and efficient researchers in theories of translation and translation criticism. In this regard, professors, on the one hand, endeavor to strengthen the French and Persian linguistic knowledge of students by offering courses in applied linguistics, terminology, etc. and on the other hand acquaint them with the modern achievements of methodology and modern theories in translation and translation criticism. It is hoped that, by delving into Persian and French literatures, the alumni could largely contribute to the field of comparative literature. Moreover, they could provide access to the achievements of modern science through facilitating research into French resources and meeting the translation needs of different institutions.
