An Overview

Following the establishment of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, the department of Persian Language and Literature, as the second academic department after medicine, was founded in 1955. The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Persian Language and Literature were launched in 1955 and 1970, respectively. The Doctoral degree program, as the second Doctoral program after that of Tehran University and the first Doctoral program in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, was launched in 1976. The first Ph.D. graduate of this department defended his dissertation in 2004. During more than three decades of unremitting efforts, educating students in Persian Language and Literature has never been interrupted. Hitherto, more than a hundred of Ph.D. graduates have been attracted to universities and other cultural centers. To expand the academic boundaries within the department, the Master’s degree program in Comparative Literature (Persian and Arabic cultures), has been recently launched, aiming to develop comparative studies in this field. Besides, the Master’s degree program in Comparative Literature (Persian and English cultures) along with Doctoral degree programs in Ferdowsi Studies and Epic Literature, Mystical Literature, and Literary History are to be established soon.

The major aim of teaching Persian Language and Literature courses to undergraduate and graduate students in universities and higher education centers, is to acquaint them with various manifestations of Persian prose and poetry and enable the alumni to put this precious knowledge into use.

The Major Goals

One of the core activities of the department of Persian Language and Literature, is the establishment of the Center of Excellence in Ferdowsi Studies, dedicated to the studies conducted on Ferdowsi and Shahnameh. Other major activities may include: conducting research projects tailored to the scientific needs of the county, supervising theses and dissertations, funding studies related to Shahnameh and epic literature, cooperating with various scientific and cultural centers, holding commemorations for Ferdowsi and other cultural figures of the country, and maintaining international links to expand the Persian language. The weekly meetings of the center typically revolve around conducting research into scientific and medical texts, mythological studies, and pre-Islamic Persian literature, holding a series of lectures on literary criticism, and reciting and interpreting Shahnameh, Asrar al-Tawhid, the History of Beyhaqi, and Masnavi.

The department of Persian Language and Literature has thus far held a number of national and international conferences. There are also weekly editorial meetings and general Persian workshops to raise the level of education in this lesson. Establishment of the Center for Iqbal Studies along with some permanent workshops on editing manuscripts were among the recent activities of this department. Journal of Literary Studies for Persian language and literature and the to-be-published Journal of Knowledge and Cognition for Ferdowsi studies and epic literature are regarded as further attempts made by this department.
